Juan Manuel Pérez

Juan Manuel Pérez is a former reference specialist in the Hispanic Division at the US Library of Congress, where he worked for 30 years. He has an AA degree from the Community College of Baltimore, a BA from Loyola College in Baltimore, and an MA and a PhD in Latin American history from Georgetown University. He is a former special contributing editor to the Handbook of Latin American Studies. He is the author of Reference Guide to Panama Materials at the Library of Congress (2010), Pro mundi beneficio: Los trabajadores gallegos en la construcción del Canal de Panamá (2007), “La División Hispánica de la Biblioteca del Congreso en el siglo XXI: Nuevas fronteras, nuevos retos” in Las bibliotecas nacionales del siglo XXI: Jornadas sobre Bibliotecas Nacionales (2005), and Latin America: A Bibliography of Works in English from 1970 to the Present (2004). He was a contributor to the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture and to The Hispanic World, 1492–1898/El mundo hispánico, 1492–1898. In 2001, he was made a knight of the Order of Queen Isabella by the king of Spain. In 2004, he was made a knight of the Order of the Camino de Santiago (by the order). He has lectured at the Library of Congress, the Museum of the Canal (Panama), the Library of the Chamber of Deputies (Spain), the Spanish National Research Council (Spain), Casa de América (Spain), the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation (Spain), Abengoa Foundation (Spain), and so forth. Dr. Pérez was born in Carreira, Ribeira, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain.
